Surfing Wetsuit are a necessary part of life, especially if your not surfing tropical waters. The suits in this section range from jacket tops, vest, spring suits, short sleeve full suits, and standard full suits. Wetsuits come in a variety of thicknesses. Basically, the thicker the suit the warmer it will keep you, however, there is a trade off. The thicker the suit the more material you are paddling with, therefore, it limits your mobility. The most flexible suits are usually the thinnest. There are also several factors that add to the warmth of your wetsuit. Some of the factors are additional lining that the suit has, what type of seams, and a properly fitting suit is arguably the key to a good wetsuit.
Examples of Wetsuit Lining
- poly pro (wicks away moisture)
- wool
- titanium
Most Common Wetsuit Seams
- Flatlock stitch- the most basic type of stitching, a needle penetrates seams connecting two pieces of neoprene. Most cost effective to produce, but is the least warm. Pros: Strength, Cons: Water leakage.
- GBS- "glued and blind stitched" is found on the majority of decent wetsuit on the market. GBS is a must for serious surfers that do not want the top of the line. Seams of neoprene are glued together and then "blind" stitched without the needle penetrating the neoprene. Pros: Warm, Flexible. Cons: Glue breaks down after some time, Strength.
- Fluid Seams- virtually no needle penetrated the seams of neoprene. The pieces are glued together are seam lines are covered by fluid to ensure watertight seal. Fluid seams on a wetsuit are the cream of the crop seams, if you can afford to get it, your body will thank you. Pros: Ultimate Warmth, Incredible Flexibility, Strength. Cons: Price, Care (not intended to be exposed in the sun for long periods of time, not intended for throwing your wetsuit in the dryer).
Wetsuit Fit
A properly fitting wetsuit is key to staying warm. The suit should fit like a second skin. It should fit snug throughout the legs, torso, arms, and shoulders. If the suit does not fit tight, water will enter the suit and will blow up like a water balloon. Your body cannot warm up that much water and you will be cold, even if you have the top of the line model.
